For twenty years, the job was simple to describe: rank on Google. You earned links, matched intent, and climbed the blue links. That game still matters — but it is no longer the whole board.

A growing share of searches never produce a click. Someone asks a question, an AI engine answers it directly, and the user moves on. Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini — they read the web, synthesise an answer, and cite a handful of sources. The new question isn’t “can I rank?” It’s “will I be the source the answer is built from?”

That discipline has a name: Answer Engine Optimisation.

SEO and AEO are cousins, not rivals

Most of what makes you rank also makes you citable: genuine expertise, clear structure, fast pages, trustworthy signals. AEO doesn’t replace SEO — it extends it. The shift is in emphasis.

A framework you can start this quarter

You don’t need to rebuild your site. You need to make it legible to machines that read for meaning.

  1. Answer the question in the first two sentences. Lead with the conclusion, then support it. Engines reward content that resolves intent quickly.
  2. Add structured data. Schema markup — Article, FAQ, Organisation, Person — tells engines what your content is. It is one of the highest-leverage, lowest-effort moves available.
  3. Build topical depth, not one-off posts. A cluster of related, interlinked pieces signals authority on a subject far more than a scattered blog.
  4. Make expertise explicit. Named authors, credentials, and consistent identity across the web build the entity signals engines use to decide who to trust.
  5. Keep it fast and clean. The technical fundamentals that helped SEO help AEO too. Nothing here asks you to abandon what already works.

The quiet advantage

Here’s the part most teams miss: AEO compounds. A page engineered to be the clearest answer to a real question keeps earning citations long after you publish it. That’s the same logic that made content marketing powerful in the first place — only now the distribution layer includes every AI assistant your buyer talks to.

The search box is becoming a chat box. The brands that adapt early won’t just be found. They’ll be the answer.
